In January 2024, we saw the advent of Fluid Motion Frames. Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is a technology developed by AMD to improve the smoothness of gameplay by generating extra frames between the ones your graphics card normally produces. FMF analyzes the existing frames and creates new, intermediate ones to fill in the gaps. This can make transitions appear smoother and reduce stutter, especially in fast-paced games. There are other frame generation technologies out there, like Nvidia's DLSS 3 and AMD FSR 3. These require specific game developer integration to work. AFMF, on the other hand, is a driver-level solution. This means it works with most modern games (using DirectX 11 or 12) and compatible AMD graphics cards (RX 6000 or 7000 series currently) without needing any changes from the game developer. This makes it a more widely applicable technology. The result? A noticeably more responsive and enjoyable gaming experience, especially in fast-paced titles. One caveat is that this technology functions best on frame rates that are already not too bad - That is to say: If you're hovering around 60 fps, enabling AFMF can significantly smooth things out. However, for games struggling at 20 fps, it won't work miracles. AFMF can still improve those lower frame rates, but the benefits won't be as dramatic.
